This was a joy to read! Thankyou Melissa for being here and writing, I too run about the house and press my nose against the window to lean out and drink in the sight of snow! I hadn't thought about how snow 'creates time'! i love this idea. p.s. your garden looks beautiful, i would love to see more of it.

Thank you Jo! For your lovely comments. I'm pleased to meet you, and have just subscribed to your Substack :-)

Thanks for the inspiration to share more of my garden in the future. It contains so many different wildlife habitats. I will look to write an article on it (with plenty of pictures) soon!

When I was younger, I was a summer girl and absolutely hated winter. But like you, I've come to appreciate winter for its purpose of slowing down and resting. Where I live now, the winters are very mild, it doesn't go below 0 degrees and hence doesn't freeze or snow at all. Still, it's colder and I always go into hibernation mode; spending lots of time at home, socialising less, sleeping more, and doing less in general. I love it even if the darkness and cold also frustrate me equally.

Hi Alex, thanks so much for sharing your experience. I wonder if you miss snow and ice? I know I couldn’t live somewhere with a warmer climate because I’d miss it too much. I was born in winter, so I sometimes wonder if that’s where I get my love of it from. I’d happily live in Scandinavia! But my husband isn’t too keen on that idea… so Yorkshire it is!!

Well I'm the opposite, I was born in the summer. Unfortunately, now living in the southern hemisphere that means my birthday is in winter, so sad! But honestly, I don't really miss snow. It didn't even occur to me to think about whether I'd miss it or not. I enjoy the mild winters although it still gets cold inside New Zealand houses because they are so poorly insulated. However, it would be nice to experience snow again on a holiday in the future. It's been years now!

A beautiful post with so much depth. To answer your question, I think it is the quite stillness as animals are hibernating and trees and plants resting. I love the quiet soft light and the twilight skies. I used to struggle with winter but now I am finding I can appreciate it so much more. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you Helen! Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, I’m so glad you enjoyed it. And yes, I hadn’t thought about it but you are right, the quiet definitely comes from the creatures hibernating, and plants resting too. It’s nice not to need to weed for a while!! I’m noticing all the birds starting up their calls again, now spring is around the corner. The noise is increasing already - but it’s the best kind of noise!!

I so agree with this, Melissa. Even shoveling the sidewalks around my home, which I previously dreaded, now offers the opportunity to move and spend some time outdoors, enjoying the quiet and slowness of a usually bustling city. Thank you for sharing your experiences with it around your home!

Thank you Monica, for your kind words 💚

How interesting that there are words for different kinds of snow! Something we clearly don't need here in the UK.

Totally enjoyed this, Melissa! I have a love-hate relationship with snow myself, having lived most of my life in Sweden (where there are words to describe different types of snow). However, the essential lessons (gifts!) this time of the year (and having to deal with it) brings us is precious and undeniable. Thank you so much for this beautiful post x

A great read. I am currently on my last day of holiday in Scotland and all the work we did preparing to be snowed in, bringing extra food, enough logs to make a lodge in itself and more. Just to be in a little corner where we missed all of the snow and a lot of the cold. Not complaining though as time out has been really invigorating, now just the drive back to the real world tomorrow

We don't usually have much snow here in Atlanta, but we had a couple of inches yesterday! I love how light reflects off of it and everything is so bright, and as you said, so quiet. At first I read "The sunsets are beautiful this time of year," as "The senses are beautiful this time of year," which is also true.

It's currently 1:30 am here in Canada. Audra and I are fighting with Wix to wrap up our launch for tomorrow (this) morning. We've been working since we got up this morning...or yesterday morning, I suppose. It's all jumbled up. I'm exhausted, and our nerves are frayed, but taking the time to read this has unexpectedly calmed me. Thank you for this. It was sorely needed. <3

You’ve perfectly encapsulated my feelings when it comes to snow! It’s enchanting, even when it’s fleeting. I also love drying off Holly’s paws in the winter - it’s a magical moment when she stands there waiting to present me with her paw, like the princess that she is, and then licks my face while I give her what, in my household, we call a ‘pawdicure’ 😂 It’s less magical on the occasions she runs straight past me and creates her own pawprint artwork on the hall carpet…🐾
